Natural Light Portraits

Sunday 21 June
George St, Ottawa - 1pm - 2 Hours
Nicolas Chevallier
This meet-up will explore how we can take beautiful portraits using natural light and backgrounds. We will explore how to recognise flattering light and how to manipulate it whilst shooting in a less controlled environment than a studio. We will explore how we can work collaboratively with our subject to achieve a portrait that captures their personality and style. We will also look at posing and setting your subject at ease. Technical learning points will include accurate focusing and metering for skin tones.

ABOUT OTTAWA
PHOTOGRAPHY
GROUP
Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Ottawa.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Ottawa Photography Group on Facebook to share your photos after the session.

The photographer was very knowledgeable and patient. I finally understand aperture and shutter speed but a short session at the beginning to review parts of the camera and how we would be applying them to taking photos would have been beneficial

a bit unstructured but enjoyed the tips and instruction. Was hard to do in a public space. Not sure this type of photography is amenable to the setting where we gathered. Could have brought my tripod, different lens but wasn't suggested. still glad I went.

Useful event. Comprehensive look at the software. Useful to have our laptops open and using the software as we went along. The instructor was effective. He regularly checked in to make sure we were following along and he took time to answer each question. His notes on the session were very useful. All in all, very good. Thank you Nicholas.

I enjoyed the afternoon sadly the weather didn't cooperate so we moved inside which ment I was over-dressed for the environment but overall the instructor reacted to the weather issue quickly. Despite there only being 5 people, the majority of participants were less experienced with photography and as a result Nickolas had to adjust his presentation and spent more time assisting those participants.

I enjoyed this event and I actually learnt a lot. Also the group was small and helpful and that was the best part. Unlike the flash photography class where the group was big and I learnt very less , did not have chance to engage with Nicholas and ask questions, it was not a good experience for me and money waste.

I was in Victoria for work and I was lucky enough to have a room with a view. I stepped outside, walked along the coast line and I just took in the fresh ocean air, the sound of the birds chirping, and then the light got really good and I was in my happy place! I was looking for Whimbrels, or other migratory shore birds when I spotted this common tern flying around. At some point it dove and caught a fish. I instinctively aimed my camera and took a few pictures before flying away.

Steam was really enshrouding the main pool of Grand Prismatic, so I looked for other compelling ways to capture images. This image features some of the sinter terraces and cooler water thermophiles thriving around the central pool perimeter.
