Natural Light Portraits

Sunday 01 June
East of the government and business district - 1pm - 2 Hours
Nicolas Chevallier
This meet-up will explore how we can take beautiful portraits using natural light and backgrounds. We will explore how to recognise flattering light and how to manipulate it whilst shooting in a less controlled environment than a studio. We will explore how we can work collaboratively with our subject to achieve a portrait that captures their personality and style. We will also look at posing and setting your subject at ease. Technical learning points will include accurate focusing and metering for skin tones. A model is present during the session.

The City at Night

The City at Night

Saturday 14 June
Laurier Avenue West - 9:30pm - 2 Hours
Nicolas Chevallier
Many people don't think about nighttime being a good time to do photography since there's a lack of light. However, armed with knowledge about your camera's settings and the properties of light, nighttime photography can be a lot of fun.

In this meetup, you'll learn about the best camera settings for nighttime photography. We'll also explore the kinds of light available to us and how to use that light to make some awesome photos. As always, there are exercises that will help you put your new knowledge to work.

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.

Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography sessions based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations in Ottawa.

  • New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month. And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next on is!

  • Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

  • What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the Ottawa Photography Group on Facebook to share your photos after the session.

Learned a few tricks and got inspired to pursue more photography Nicolas was informative and patient at answering lots of questions and helping students get the most out of their equipment We took the necessary time to dive in to four different photos to ensure the objective, details and technical aspects were understood. I'm more confident as a result and understand my camera capabilities much better now

I like the class and learn more and really put that into practice. What I would suggest, is another spot. I understand that Downtown may be the more convenience spot to meet. But us getting boring. The parliament is under construction, so that really does not give a good sight for capturing images.

I captured this photo during our first family stroll on the first warm day after a long, harsh winter. The Canadian Museum of History stood there like a sculpture, its flowing lines echoing nature and movement?almost like it was breathing again with the new season. In post-processing, I converted the image to black and white to bring out the strong shapes and contrasts. This helped highlight the play between light and shadow and made the textures of the stone come alive.Shot with a Nikon Z5

This October image of a chipmunk was taken on my Lanark County property, I prefer to photograph small wildlife such as this fellow in a natural rustic setting. I always take my images of wildlife big or small early morning or late afternoon?not only are creatures more active but the low angle of light provides better modeling of the subject. When I frame my subjects, I look for angles that provide uncluttered backgrounds, I leave negative space in the framing to allow for text to be added if nee

I was on an island tour of Barbados, and we stopped for lunch at a house serving as a restaurant that had a scenic view. After our lunch we were given less than 15 minutes for looking around and to grab photos. I had seen the boulders and knew I had to have my tripod, so I went to our shuttle grabbed my backpack and tripod. I was going over potential shots in my head. I made it to a cleared area and started setting up my tripod and camera up knowing I didn't have much time. I decided I wanted to

This Tigress took a long swim to cool off from the soaring afternoon heat exceeding 100 degrees. We waited for more than 2 hours to get our vehicle close enough to have a clear shot of her and her three subadults, resting along the water?s edge nearby. The offspring slept and stretched while she kept a keen lookout. Captured in April 2025.

This ground to sky upward lightning was captured on May 1, 2025 near Bandera Texas using a full frame digital Nikon with a 28mm lens. I had the ISO set to 200 and the aperture at F/9 focused to infinity. It is a 30 second exposure. This was a very lucky shot as I had just moved the camera to view this portion of the sky moments before it happened. Although it looks like the lightning is coming from the ground, it's actually emerging from a tall radio tower about 6 miles out. The image is
